FAQs
Should I paint or caulk first?
Caulk can’t be applied to bare wood or plaster, otherwise it fails over time. So, prime every surface, fill, sand, caulk, then paint.
Can you paint over caulk before it cures?
Sometimes you can get away with painting caulk before it’s properly cured, but only when using a flexible paint like acrylic eggshell. Ideally you should wait until your caulk has set and finished shrinking before painting.
Can you rub down Decorators caulk?
Not really. If you start abrading caulk then you will damage it, and it can be difficult to repair without removing all the caulk and starting again.
Is caulk better than silicone for skirting?
You can’t paint over silicone, but you can paint over caulk. So, always caulk internal corners, and between skirting and wall.
Some people finish the painting, then seal the gap between skirting and laminate floor. This isn’t advised by a lot of manufacturers but does look better. Silicone is better suited for this because of its superior flexibility. However, you will need to remove it when you need to paint, then apply more silicone.
